Since I became a makeup artist, some of the first jobs I booked were for boudoir shoots. I loved being a part of these shoots because I got to make my clients look glamorous and beautiful and see how they opened up and shined throughout the shoot. I loved that fashion was a big part of the shoot, and it reminded me of playing dress up as a kid, which was my favorite thing to do.
When I first thought about becoming a photographer, I knew that I wanted to shoot boudoir only. Boudoir photography is all about helping a woman feel beautiful, sensual and feminine and being able to express that side of herself, when so often we try to hide it.
But even though I loved boudoir and wanted to create this art, I hadn’t done a shoot for myself. (Well, I had done one years ago, but it was a pin up theme and totally not me). I wanted to do a shoot, but I had tons of excuses about why it wasn’t the right time. I wanted to wait till I lost 20 lbs and was in better shape. I needed to save the money because I was broke. I didn’t have time because I was so busy with work. I had other things that were more “necessary” to pay for, and a boudoir shoot felt frivolous. I wasn’t photogenic, and didn’t know if I would like my photos. I didn’t have any sexy clothing and lingerie. And I didn’t know where to do the shoot. My apartment wasn’t “sexy” and I didn’t want to do it in a studio. So. Many. Excuses.
I realized that if I wasn’t ready to do a shoot now, exactly as I am, then how could I expect women that may be feeling the same way to jump in and do a shoot?
I decided I wasn’t going to let my excuses hold me back. I wanted to be a role model for the women I wanted to attract to my business to not wait to have their own shoot. I contacted my friend and fellow boudoir photographer Danielle Fletcher and told her I needed to do a shoot stat. I knew if anyone was going to get me out of my comfort zone it was Danielle. We set a date for a few weeks later.
I was feeling nervous leading up to the shoot. I was at the heaviest weight I had ever been, and not feeling super confident about my body. I had no idea what to wear. And I was worried I wouldn’t like the way I looked in the photos. But I knew I needed to do the shoot for myself, as a way to really accept my body as she was and see her as beautiful. And I needed a way to feel more feminine and sensual. I had been wearing yoga pants too often, and hadn’t been making self care a priority.
Danielle suggested a couple cute and sexy bodysuits from Free People, which I promptly bought. And I was ready.
I put myself in Danielle’s hands and let her plan the shoot around her vision for me. And I let go of all expectations, fears and doubts and opened myself up to the magic of boudoir.
As the shoot progressed, I started to feel more and more confident. I appreciated my body for her curves. And I felt sexy as hell. I almost didn’t even care about what the images looked like because the experience of the shoot helped me connect to my feminine, sensual side in a way I had put aside.
When I got my images back, I was so excited. I looked HOT! And I loved them! I didn’t pick them apart and look at the flaws I would’ve seen before. I looked for what I loved and appreciated about them. Seeing my images made me realize that I am beautiful just as I am now, and I didn’t need to fix or change anything about myself.
I would love for you to feel this way about yourself too. I know it can be a struggle to feel beautiful when you are surrounded by images on social networks and in the media of what we’re “supposed” to look like as females.
But the next time you look in the mirror, or at a photo of yourself, my wish is for you to see what’s beautiful and amazing about the woman staring back at you. That woman doesn’t need to lose 20 lbs, or have a “perfect” body, or have fuller lips/higher cheekbones/thinner cheeks/less wrinkles, etc. She’s gorgeous just as she is.
Let me show you how beautiful, feminine and bold you are with a boudoir shoot. It will help you see yourself in a whole new light.
