When I was in my 20’s, I worked as a cocktail waitress at a bar at the arena that hosted the Sacramento Kings basketball team. I loved this job for many reasons (the excitement of the game, the short hours, the cash!), but I also loved it because it gave me an excuse to really play with my makeup. We all had to wear the same black uniforms, so if you were a creative like me, the best way to express yourself was through your hair and makeup.
Each shift I would get in tune with how I was feeling, and how I wanted to express myself, and then I would come up with a look that I felt fit that expression. Sometimes I would channel a celebrity that I admired, or sometimes it was based on my mood. I looked to photos I saw in fashion magazines or characters in movies. This was before YouTube, so it was really about me experimenting how I could recreate that look. I was already a makeup junkie, so being able to use all my colorful MAC eyeshadows was so much fun for me. And being a cocktail waitress was the perfect place for me to go all out with my makeup and hair.
Now that I’m older and my style has changed, (and no longer a cocktail waitress,) I pretty much do the same natural, no makeup look all the time. Sometimes I forget how much fun it is to play and experiment with makeup, and to use it as a way to express yourself.
I think it's important for us to find ways to express ourselves, whether it's with our hair and makeup, our fashion and style, our accessories, or even our body art. It's one of the great joys of being a woman!
In my blog posts I talk about natural beauty a lot. I Iove seeing a woman's natural beauty shine through, and not using makeup as a mask. But using makeup as a way to be expressive, or experiment is part of the fun of being a woman.
Makeup doesn't have to be about masking who you are. It can be about expressing yourself, and how you're feeling. You can express different moods or channel different sides of your personality. Just like with fashion, you can use it to make a statement about who you are. It can be a way to embrace your femininity, and show it off.
Makeup can bring out the creative artist in you, and be a way to express yourself and fulfill your creative needs. Especially if you're in a career where you feel like you don't get to be creative in your day to day activities, or if you're a busy mom chasing little ones around.
So I encourage you to break out of your everyday makeup routine sometime and just play. Do it on your next night out. Or do it to shake things up with your every day look. Or simply just do it late it at night in front of your bathroom mirror.
Don’t worry about your makeup looking perfect, or judging yourself because you think you don’t know how to do makeup. This is all about you having fun and feeling good. Find an inspiration photo, a celebrity you admire, or just experiment with different colors. Spend some time on YouTube and recreate a look you find on there. My favorite makeup channel for having fun with makeup is pixiwoo.
Have fun, and be proud of your inner artist for expressing herself through the art of beauty.
I’d love for you to post a photo of yourself with your fun makeup look on Instagram and share it with me by tagging me! You can find me here on Instagram, where I post lots of photos of beauty inspiration and my life as an artist.
