One of the questions I get asked a lot is where to have a boudoir shoot. Sometimes this question gets women so anxious and they get caught up in this that it prevents them from reaching out to do a shoot. They think they have to come up with a perfect, epic location, and if they don’t have one their shoot isn’t going to look great.
But the truth is, your boudoir shoot is about YOU and not your location. And I’ve shot in some places that look amazing in photos, but in real life aren’t some epically gorgeous outdoor location or home. Sometimes simple is better than complicated. I’d rather my images told the story of who you are as a woman and sensual being, rather than focusing on an unreal location (of course, if you’d like to fly me to Paris to do your shoot in a beautiful Parisian flat I’m totally up for that, but it’s not necessary for you to have beautiful photos!).
My favorite place to photograph women for their boudoir shoots is… their own home! And here’s why: It’s where you feel the most comfortable, and like your authentic self. Doing a boudoir shoot can make you feel a little uncomfortable and a little nervous. But most likely, you feel more comfortable and relaxed in your own home, and more likely to let loose of that sensual creature inside you. You don’t have to have a million dollar home to have beautiful images of yourself, trust me. All you need is great light and a little imagination to create your visual story.
I shot the beautiful Miss K in the hallway of my apartment building, and with the dramatic light and urban halls, her photos gave her a sensual edge that looked beautiful and brought out a different side of her. The simple environment helped you to focus on her and who she is rather than where she is.
But let's say your home isn't an option, or you're traveling to your photographer instead of having her come to you. How do you find the perfect place to have your shoot if they don't have a studio?
First, think of the vibe you're going for. Is it urban, intimate, rustic and outdoors, luxurious...? Once you know what kind of vibe you want, then you can narrow down some options.
If it's outdoors, think of a beautiful park, body of water, or outdoor location that has the elements you're looking for. Do you like trees, wide open fields, or rolling hills? Are you more of a water girl, and would love to have a waterfall, ocean, lake or river as the background? Think of what nature has to offer in your area and how that will help tell your story. Just remember that outdoors doesn't always have the privacy you may want, unless it's a private property!
For an urban or modern vibe, think of either doing your shoot in an industrial looking studio, loft, warehouse or city streets.
A homey, intimate or cozy vibe could be accomplished with a great airbnb that has great natural light. It will look more personal than a hotel room.
And if luxury is your thing, then renting a fabulous hotel room or suite might be the best option for you!
There are so many ways and places to get creative to have beautiful photos that express who you are as a woman!
